The project involves the construction of a new single track railway line, 31,8 km long, connecting Kavala freight port (Philippos Port, in the area of Nea Karvali) with the existing railway line Thesssaloniki – Alexandroupolis in the area of Toxotes Xanthis.

The new railway line starts at Nea Karvalli settlement, where a Railway Stop will be built to serve the residential area, and continues towards the settlements of Perni and Gravouna, where a Railway Station will be constructed. It then mostly runs parallel to Egnatia Odos Highway and meets the existing railway line Thessaloniki – Alexandroupolis in the area of Toxotes Xanthis, at the Hellenic Sugar Industry.

It is noted that this line is part of the new rail corridor Thessaloniki – Amphipolis – Kavala – Xanthi, which was included in the TEN-T core network under the new European policy guidelines for the Trans-European Transport Network 2014-2020.
